Portalegre: Where It All Begins
Portalegre, a charming town in the heart of Alto Alentejo, is where our adventure kicks off. Founded in the 12th century, this historical town offers a blend of medieval and modern charm. Did you know that Portalegre was once famous for its tapestry factories? It’s also home to one of the best examples of Renaissance architecture – the Cathedral of Portalegre!
Gastronomy: Here is the perfect place to start with something simple yet iconic — how about some **Cação Soup** or **Açorda Alentejana? For dessert, don’t miss the local sweet, Toucinho do Céu?
Wines: Before you leave, don’t forget to taste the local wines. Portalegre has fantastic red and white wines, especially those from the Quinta do Centro, located on the mountain slopes.
Fun Fact: Portalegre has more museums per square meter than some major European cities. Who said the Alentejo was just about wine and scenery?
Marvão: A Castle in the Clouds
From Portalegre, we head straight to Marvão, a village that feels like it’s straight out of a fairytale. Perched 860 meters above sea level, Marvão offers breathtaking views. Its walls and castle were once considered impregnable, and for centuries, Marvão was a strategic point on smuggling routes between Portugal and Spain.
Gastronomy: Here, a good lunch might include traditional dishes like **Roast Lamb** or **Migas with Alentejan Pork**. The olives and olive oil from the region are also of impressive quality.
Wines: Marvão is an excellent place to taste regional wines, especially those produced in the mountainous areas, which have unique characteristics.
Fun Fact: Legend has it that whoever controls Marvão controls the world! Okay, maybe that’s a stretch, but this village was pivotal in countless historical battles.
Smuggling Routes and Ancient Prisons
Get ready to explore the secret routes used by smugglers between Portugal and Spain. These hidden trails are full of mystery and adventure, and even today, walking along them, you can feel the rush of smuggling days.
Fun Fact: Did you know that smugglers often used camouflaged horses and donkeys to transport illicit goods? Spy tactics worthy of a movie!
If you’re feeling peckish again, a small break to snack on regional cheeses and cured meats is always a good idea!
Wine Experience in the Heart of Alentejo
For wine lovers, Alentejo is a true paradise. Along our route, we will make strategic stops at wineries where you can sample renowned wines, such as those from **Herdade do Esporão** or **Adega Mayor**.
Fun Fact The Alentejo is one of the largest and oldest wine-producing regions in Portugal, with winemaking dating back to Roman times!
